The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam negotiations

Description
The Trump Administration has cited the Egypt–Ethiopia dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam as part of President Trump’s broader peace record. The dispute centers on the filling and operation of the GERD on the Blue Nile, an issue involving Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan. During President Trump’s first term, the United States supported negotiations aimed at a “cooperative, sustainable, and mutually beneficial agreement,” and Treasury-led talks with the World Bank produced progress on filling schedules, drought mitigation, long-term dam operations, coordination, dispute resolution, information sharing, and dam safety. In 2020, the Treasury Department stated that the United States had facilitated preparation of an agreement and would remain engaged until the countries signed a final accord. In 2025, President Trump again discussed the dam with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Official sources therefore support describing the case as a high-level U.S. mediation effort to resolve a major regional water-security dispute.
