The May 2025 Border Conflict

Description
In spring 2025, India and Pakistan experienced their most serious military confrontation in decades after an April 22 attack near Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir killed 26 people, most of them Indian Hindu tourists. India attributed the attack to Pakistan-linked militants and soon took retaliatory diplomatic and policy steps, including suspending aspects of the Indus Waters Treaty, while Pakistan denied responsibility and announced countermeasures.

The crisis escalated in early May when India launched Operation Sindoor, striking alleged terrorist targets in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and inside Pakistan; Pakistan condemned the strikes as an act of war, and both sides exchanged drone, missile, and artillery attacks over several days. The fighting raised significant international concern because both countries are nuclear-armed, and U.S. officials urged de-escalation while engaging diplomatically with both governments.

A ceasefire was announced on May 10, though the agreement appeared fragile and both India and Pakistan continued to dispute responsibility, battlefield outcomes, and the role of outside mediation.
